Man-made Mineral Fibres

چکیده

practice, the detection Ii mit of scanning electron microscopy is about 0.1 j.m (Middleton, 1982). Transmission electron microscopy may be required to detect very thin fibres (Rood & Streeter, 1985). The elemental composition of individual fibres can be determined with an energy-dispersive X-ray ana1ysis attachment combined with an electron microscope (Middleton, 1982). Fibres are counted and sized either on photomicrographs (W orld Health Organization, 1985) or directly on the screen.

Asbestos fibres and man made mineral fibres: induction and release of tumour necrosis factor-alpha from rat alveolar macrophages.

OBJECTIVES Mounting evidence suggests that asbestos fibres can stimulate alveolar macrophages to generate the potent inflammatory and fibrogenic mediator, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and that this may play an important part in the onset and development of airway inflammation and lung fibrosis due to asbestos fibre inhalation. Little is known, however, about the ability of other mi...

General Remarks on Man-made Mineral Fibres

induction of cancer. It is important that sufficient numbers of fibres from each sample to be tested for carcinogenicity be measured using methods that allow detection of both submicroscopie and microscopic fibres, so that the number of fibres of specific dimensional categories per unit mass can be calculated. When characterizing exposures to man-made mineraI fibres, it is necessary to specify ...

Formation of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine by asbestos and man made mineral fibres.

Samples of rockwool and glass fibre were compared with chrysotile fibres for their capacity to hydroxylate 2-deoxyguanosine to 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, a reaction that is mediated by formation of hydroxyl radicals. All three fibres produced 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in the absence of H2O2. The chrysotile fibres were most potent and produced about ten times more of the modified nucleoside than roc...

Mortality and incidence of cancer of workers in the man made vitreous fibres producing industry: an international investigation at 13 European plants.

A total of 25 146 workers at 13 plants producing man made mineral fibres (MMMF) in seven European countries (Denmark, Finland, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and United Kingdom) were studied in a historical cohort investigation. At 12 of the 13 plants an environmental survey was carried out to determine present day concentrations of airborne man made mineral fibres that sho...
